New Bits For The Trek

Tuesday February 16, 2010

In preparation for better weather I’ve invested in some bits for the Trek.  I’m planning on some long rides this year and thought I’d upgrade the Trek to provide better performance/comfort for the longer road trips.

My last ‘long’ ride was to Hyde Park and back in one day, a trip of 77miles in total, last September.  During that ride, I got numbness and discomfort in my hands and the knobbly ‘tractor’ tyres fitted to the Trek weren’t ideal for long road rides.

So, as I said, in preparation for this year’s rides, I’ve purchased some new bits:

The current plan is to work on the bike this weekend, add the tyres and the grips, and then put in some local mileage prior to really hitting the roads for some long journeys.

More on these purchases and their installation over the weekend.

Big Apples Tested – They’re Greeeaat!

Tuesday May 26, 2009

Had to get out and test the new Schwalbe Big Apple tyres tonight, I was eager to see if they lived up to the hype.

It was almost 9pm and the sun was just setting so I kitted the Dahon out with my Cateye lights and the Frogs and hit the road.  Surfaces cycled in the test included: tarmac/road, grass, shingle and Rochester’s cobble/block streets.  The BAs definitely DO improve the comfort of the D7HG and also the general handling.  The wider profile tyres give it a more ‘normal’ feel – the Kwest tyres were just a little too thin (especially as I’m 6 foot tall and ## stone!)  😉

So, according to me (!), the Big Apples improve the looks of the bike AND the ride and handling.

Definitely a recommended upgrade!

New Tyres Collected

Saturday May 23, 2009

Dahon and New TyresCollected my new Big Apple tyres from the Post Office this morning, before 0900.  It’s a really nice day out there, the sun is up and it’s nice and warm.

Having already been shopping for my breakfast, the bike was already loaded up so the tyres were strapped in underneath.

The plan is to fit them tomorrow.

This photo was taken on my phone camera, near the Castle.

Schwalbe Big Apple Tyres

Thursday May 14, 2009

Finally got around to ordering some Schwalbe Big Apple tyres for my Dahon tonight.  I’ve read a lot of great reviews of them and the ride quality is supposed to be much better relative to the standard tyres.

Mech1, a reader of ‘Dave On Dahon’ and frequent commenter, has already fitted Big Apples to his Dahon.

I’ll be checking the forums prior to making the change.  I’ll report here with progress and any findings or advice.

Tyres ordered from Dotbike.

Topeak JoeBlow Sport II

Thursday April 9, 2009

I was pumping my Dahon tyres up last weekend with the Crankbrothers Alloy pump I’d bought earlier in the year.  As I pumped away I thought that there must be an easier and quicker way to inflate these tyres.  Don’t get me wrong, the little Alloy pump is great but more suited for roadside repairs than general maintenance.

So I ventured to Halfords this afternoon to pick up a Topeak JoeBlow Sport II track pump.  Now this makes pumping quick and fun!  It’s definitely something for the shed/garage and not for taking out on a ride, but with its size and weigh comes rapid tyre inflation and minimum effort.

It’s very well made: steel tube and base, aluminium thumb-lock lever.  The hose swivels 360 degrees, it inflates to 160psi/11bar and includes ball adaptors.

Now I have no excuse not to keep my tyres inflated.
