Folding in Beijing

Saturday July 23, 2011

Just got back from a week in Beijing with work.  My first time heading East and it was a great experience.  There are a lot of bikes there (as suggested by the song by Katie Melua!) and it was good to see that there were quite a few folders.

I’m not sure that I’d want to cycle around the city though.  There are wide bicycle lanes but junctions appeared to be a free-for-all at many times with pedestrians and cycles taking pot-luck with encounters with cars and lorries.

But all in all, a great city with very friendly and cheerful people.

  1. I bought this wee 16″ folder there http://www.flickr.com/photos/bjorke/5682790726/ for (iirc) 370RMB! I rode it around the central city, it was easier than walking because the hucksters will spot a “lowai” a block away. Too fast for them!

Sadly it’s officially max-rated to 50kg so a creaky ride but occasionally it gets used by someone a bit smaller than me 🙂
