Broadband Speed – Virgin Media

Sunday January 30, 2011

My broadband speed is still very good on Virgin Media.  I pay for 20Mb/s and that’s what I’m getting.  Nice to see!

I haven’t been tempted to upgrade to the 50Mb/s or 100Mb/s service yet – I don’t need that speed as I’m not a download or file-sharing fanatic.

My latest test results via SpeedTest.net:

Top 100 Jazz Albums

Sunday January 23, 2011

In my never-ending quest to find new music, yesterday I found the Jazz100 list of the top 100 Jazz albums.

The good news, from my Jazz music taste perspective, is that I already have 11% of the albums so there’s only another 89% to go!  Four of my already purchased albums are in the top 10.  The 11 already in my collection are listed below.

1 Miles Davis Kind of Blue
3 Charles Mingus Mingus Ah Um
4 The Dave Brubeck Quartet Time Out
9 Herbie Hancock Maiden Voyage
12 Keith Jarrett The Koln Concert
19 Lee Morgan The Sidewinder
31 Weather Report Heavy Weather
33 Herbie Hancock Head Hunters
60 Sonny Clark Cool Struttin’
69 Jimmy Smith The Sermon
100 Charlie Haden & Pat Metheny Beyond the Missouri Sky

I’ve added a few more from the list to my Amazon basket so they’ll be bought at some time this year, not sure when.  Buying them via Amazon’s digital download service means that some of them are as cheap as £3 per album.

There’s a lot of quality music in the world…

New Dahon Bikes For 2011

Monday January 3, 2011

Dahon have updated their site with the 2011 models today.

I quite like the Speed P8 but I don’t think my budget will stretch to a new bike this year!

I’m going to give my two bikes a quick service this month and get them ready for a year of increase cycling.  Both (Dahon and Trek) need a dust down and a quick mechanical check and then they’ll be ready for the road.

Must add that to my list of things to do…

Folding Shovel

Saturday January 1, 2011

With all the recent snow and resulting travel chaos, I invested in a folding shovel to keep in the car in case I ended up getting snowed in at work (nightmare scenario!).

It arrived yesterday, almost a month after I’d ordered it, and the snow has now gone, but it will be kept in the car in case of more snow or trouble in the years to come.

It’s a British Army shovel, and has seen a fair bit of use (paint missing and some dents) but it’s small, light and it only cost me £15 from eDisposals.com.

eDisposals is run for The Disposal Services Authority (DSA) which off-loads used equipment for the MOD.  You can get an array of equipment from them such as my folding shovel or an armoured Range Rover or you can even tender for HMS Invincible (an aircraft carrier!!!)

Happy New Year!

Saturday January 1, 2011

Well, it’s another year!  2011.  I wonder what it’ll hold for us all?

One of my New Year Resolutions is to get out on the bikes more often than I did in the latter half of 2010.  The early part of the year was very cycling-orientated with my 307 mile epic in there for April, however with work and other things happening in my life, cycling had to take a back seat.

This year is going to be different and the bikes are going to be free once more!

Happy New Year to you all.  Happy cycling for 2011!
